FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK Aloha from sunny Maui, Jim.
On with the news….
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
A special BOD meeting was held via phone conference on 6/24/04. The primary purpose of the meeting was to appoint two new members to the board following the resignation of Larry Kerr (E101) and soon to resign Dick Greene (H301). Both directors are in the process of selling their units.
Harold Hyman (E201) was appointed to fill Dick’s remaining term, and Bill Lambert (N101) will fill Larry’s remaining term. Bob Pure (C303) was elected to serve as the new board president.
Other business included a discussion to consider restricting rentals to a minimum of 30 days. Presumably this would grandfather all existing owners and would only affect new owners upon sale at a future date to be determined. No action was taken.
A second special BOD meeting was held on 7/16 to discuss unpermitted expansions in some third floor units. The expansions are typically storage spaces built into attic space below the roof. Since this area is presumably designated as common area, the AOAO has certain responsibilities regarding the use and maintenance of the space.
The BOD decided to hire a licensed professional to determine if any hazardous conditions exist before a policy regarding use is decided.
We wish to thank Larry Kerr for his many contributions to the Kaanapali Royal and especially his tireless effort leading the opposition to prevent the change in land use on Lot 28 (the Sunstone Project). We also wish to thank Dick Greene, our departing president, for his part in making the Kaanapali Royal No Ko Oi (the best). The board meets formally three times annually. Special meetings are conducted as needed. Owners are encouraged to attend any board meeting.
The next Board of Directors meeting will be held in San Diego, on October 16th. NEW WEB-SITE
Our new Kaanapali Royal web site at http://www.kaanapaliroyal.com/ is designed as a one-stop resource center.

PAPAYA MEALYBUG AT THE KR
About mid May we noticed what appeared to be a whitefly infestation starting on the plumeria trees in the lower lot. White-fly is a common pest appearing every year that stunts the plumeria leaves, makes a mess, then moves on.
This looked a little different. It was a little early, spread more slowly, and totally defoliated some of our trees. A call to Mach Fukada at the Dept of Agriculture eventually confirmed the first sighting on west Maui of the papaya mealybug. There are confirmed infestations in Kahului and Kiehi.
The mealybug is native to Mexico and found throughout Central America, in the Caribbean Islands, Florida, Guam and now in Hawaii. It favors papaya, plumeria, and hibiscus. This tiny crawler injects a toxin as it feeds that will stunt and deform leaves, which eventually drop off.
On his visit, the inspector noticed “something good happening here”. A natural predator already seemed to be attacking the pest. He theorized that our “limited pesticide” policy worked in our favor on this pest. Other properties were spraying like crazy and killing off the natural predators.
Initially our treatment was to blast the little buggers with soapy water. This seemed to work for awhile, but eventually they started to get ahead of us. Last week Mid-Pacific Pest Control injected the grounds with a systemic poison for control as they feed. We are just now starting to see results.
NEW SUBDIVISION
A recent notice announcing a hearing to consider a zoning and Community Plan change prompted many calls from owners.
This proposal is for a zoning change of 7.65 acres from light industrial to residential to create an 18-lot subdivision.
The undeveloped property directly across the highway from the KR has been used as an illegal dumpsite for years. Last year there was a fire on the property.

SUNSTONE PROJECT UPDATE
On July 9th the County Council voted to approve the developer’s request to amend the community plan from park to residential.
The developer is proposing a five-lot subdivision on 1.6 acres along Kekaa Drive. Interested individuals will have opportunity for input during the plan approval process.

WHERE IS KAHEKILI BEACH PARK?
Many locals refer to this as “Airport Beach”. In the 60s and 70s the Kaanapali Airstrip and Terminal occupied the area. At that time it was a major entryway bringing visitors in Cessna 420s. You can probably still find some sections of the old airstrip covered by weeds and Kiawe trees.
Named for Maui’s last high chief, Kahekili, the park was once a training ground for warriors. It was also the launching site for canoes bound for Lanai.
Today the Westin has almost completed construction of 280 time-share villas. More will eventually follow until the property is fully built out.
